Overuse injuries were once virtually unknown in young athletes. All that changed with the emergence of organized sports and their emphasis on repetitive coaching drills, as well as the recent trend toward sports specialization in young athletes

In 1982, a catastrophically injured high school football player at West Seattle (Wash.) High School was awarded $6.3 million when the school district was found liable for the injury. The athlete, Chris Thompson, was not warned about the dangers of lowering his head during a tackle. This now-famous case shook the athletic world.

Many separate supervision into two categories: general and specific. General supervision refers to when you are overseeing a group activity such as a tennis or lacrosse scrimmage. Specific supervision takes place through a teaching or close-monitoring situation such as working with one or two individuals.
