National Center For Sports Safety Hosts National Safety Summit In Birmingham

Author: NCSS Information Team

Birmingham, AL — The National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS) is hosting the “Setting the Standard” Summit 2002 to initiate a movement to raise national safety standards for youth volunteer coaches directly affecting the safety of millions of youth athletes across the country. The “Setting the Standard” Summit 2002 will be held August 2-4th in Birmingham, Alabama.

The “Setting the Standard” Summit 2002 will address the need for educating youth volunteer coaches in sports safety and injury prevention. It will provide an opportunity for some of the nation’s leading medical, safety and curriculum experts and members of top sports organizations to assist in the development of minimal sports standards and the design of a new user-friendly course that can be taught virtually, hands-on or combination of both.

Representatives from the American College of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, Centers for Disease Control, National Athletic Trainers Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Alabama Fire and Life Safety Educators, Alabama Fire Chiefs Association, Lakeshore Foundation, Alabama Recreation and Parks Association, U.S. Soccer Federation, Pop Warner Football, Alabama Youth Soccer Association, USA Track and Field, among many more will all be in attendance at the Summit.

“This movement to “Raise the Standard” is so important to keep our youth athletes healthy and safe on and off the field,” states Lawrence J. Lemak, M.D., founder of the NCSS. “There is not one parent that would drop their child off at a local community pool if there were not a certified lifeguard on duty. That same standard of care should be available for every playing field, gymnasium and stadium in this country,” adds Lemak.

The NCSS’s mission is to educate coaches in youth sports on injury prevention, sports safety and emergency response. This Summit will allow for all of its attendees to have a voice in this new strategy and take part in the movement to “Raise the Standard” of coaching in America along with the NCSS.
